About Your Account

Everything you need to know about your library account.

Overview

Your Marshall District Library card gives you access to print and electronic library materials, online databases, and computer use in the library. When you receive and sign your library card, you accept responsibility for use of the library and for any damaged or not returned materials and/or overdue fines.

It is important that you do not lend your card to anyone. Keep your card in a safe place and take the time to monitor your account regularly. Report lost/stolen cards immediately so no one else can use your card. You remain responsible for any activity prior to your report.

Account Access

You can access your library card account at any time here or by clicking the blue My Account button in the site’s navigation bar. After entering your name and library card number, you’ll be signed in to your personal account. From here you can:

  • View checked-out materials
  • Review due dates
  • Check for outstanding fines
  • Manage reserved items

Lost or Stolen Library Cards

You MUST report lost or stolen cards immediately to the library to stop any activity. Please check with the library to verify any materials currently checked out and/or late fees.

You will need to reconcile all activity so that a new card can be issued.

There is a $1.00 charge to replace lost cards. You may be asked to provide documentation to verify a stolen card or stolen materials (e.g., police report).

Account Maintenance

Monitor Your Account

We recommend you monitor your account regularly so you can stay on top of due dates, track your borrowing activity, and avoid unexpected fees. Checking in periodically also helps you catch items ready for pickup and manage your holds more smoothly.

Update Personal Information

Please report any changes to your account information to the Library. To update your personal information, visit the library’s Help Desk. You will be required to show proof of your new address.

Card Expiration & Renewal

Most Marshall District Library cards expire after three years. Specific types have different expiration periods:

  • Standard Cards: 3 years
  • Corporate Cards: 1 year
  • Non-Resident Cards: 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year

To renew an expired card, you must visit the library to verify all information is still current. If you do not visit the library after your card has expired, your account will be removed and you will need to fill out a new application with proof of address.

Borrowing Information

Loan Periods & Renewals

Most library materials are checked out for two weeks. Renewals are done upon request in person, by phone, or online as long as the material has not been reserved for someone else. Loan periods may be changed in special circumstances.

Exceptions:

  • Reference books do not normally leave the building, but may be checked out overnight at the discretion of the Help Desk staff.
  • Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspots may be borrowed for two weeks and may not be renewed.
  • Newspapers do not circulate. Back issues of magazines may be checked out for two weeks.

Number of Check-Outs per Account

You may check out up to 70 items at a time with your MDL Card, including a maximum of 10 DVDs.

Returning Library Materials

Materials may be returned inside the library at the drop box at the Help Desk. The library does have a drive-up box in the north alley, which is open 24 hours.

Fines & Fees

Late Materials

All Library materials must be returned on or before their due date to avoid fines.

Fines & Overdues

  • Fines accumulate at a rate of 20¢ per item per day except for equipment items. Fines for equipment items accumulate at a rate of $5 per item per day.
  • When multiple items checked out at the same time become overdue, a maximum of $15 will be charged per return date.
  • As a courtesy to our patrons, overdue reminder letters are sent when an item is four to five weeks overdue.
  • Once a final overdue notice is mailed, patrons have two weeks to return the materials. After that the items are no longer considered to be a part of the library’s collection (because they are no longer useful to the library or have been replaced) and payment for the items is required in order to reinstate a borrower’s library privileges. Borrowers with excessive fines may be referred to a collection agency.

Lost or Damaged Materials

  • Current replacement cost will be charged for any non-returned materials.
  • Fines may be assessed for damage to materials that are still usable.
  • Additional charges may be involved with Interlibrary Loan materials.

Blocks or Suspensions

Borrowing privileges are suspended in the case of a borrower who has failed to return one or more library items without making restitution, or when total overdue fines exceed $10.

Tips to Avoid Fines
  • Return materials on time.
  • Remember to renew your items in person, by phone, or online.
  • Don’t ignore overdue notices. Contact the library as soon as possible if you believe you received one in error.

Parent/Guardian Information

  • By signing a child’s library card application, the parent/guardian is accepting responsibility for the child’s use of the library and for any damaged or lost materials and/or library fines.
  • The library does not monitor what children check out. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to be aware of the materials their children check out. The library can place certain limits on children’s accounts upon the request of the parent/guardian. Please ask Help Desk staff for more information.

Always have your library card or some form of picture I.D. with you when you visit the Marshall District Library.
